Sidoarjo 2025 Statistical Data Exposé Highlights Demographic Challenges and Data Governance Quality
Sidoarjo — The Sidoarjo Regency Government continues to strengthen the implementation of the One Data Indonesia policy through the 2025 Sidoarjo Regency Statistical Data Exposé and Preparation for the 2026 Sectoral Statistical Data Compilation, held on Tuesday, 13 January 2025, on the 3rd Floor of the Regional Secretariat Building of Sidoarjo Regency.
The event was chaired by the Regional Secretary of Sidoarjo Regency, Fenny Apridawati, and featured the Head of Statistics Indonesia (BPS) Sidoarjo Regency, Mohammad Ismail, as one of the key speakers. The forum served as a strategic platform to align understanding among regional agencies regarding regional macro conditions while strengthening the governance of government data that is high-quality, open, easily accessible, and shareable across institutions.
In his presentation, Mohammad Ismail delivered a Macro and Population Data Analysis highlighting two sides of Sidoarjo’s development: notable achievements and serious challenges ahead. From a demographic perspective, he warned that Sidoarjo’s demographic bonus may have already passed, as indicated by the increasing trend of the non-productive age population. This condition points toward the risk of an aging population, projected to intensify toward 2035.
“This phenomenon needs to be anticipated early so that it does not become a burden on future development,” he emphasized.
On the other hand, the quality of human development in Sidoarjo shows a very strong performance. Sidoarjo’s Human Development Index (HDI) ranks first among all regencies in East Java and fourth overall when combined with regencies and municipalities across East Java. This achievement underscores that investments in education, health, and living standards have delivered tangible results.
However, discussions during the forum also underlined another critical challenge: the quality of data and information systems. This issue was elaborated by Imam, Head of the Data and Statistics Division at the East Java Provincial Communication and Informatics Office. He explained that in terms of the Data and Information System (SDI), Sidoarjo ranks 15th out of 38 regencies/municipalities in East Java, with a “fair” status, indicating substantial room for improvement.
Meanwhile, regarding the Geospatial Information Network Node (JIG), Sidoarjo’s performance index falls within the “Established” category. This remains below the East Java provincial average, which has reached the “Developing” level, thus requiring serious efforts to elevate Sidoarjo’s JIG to the “Operational” stage.
Overall, the forum reaffirmed that Sidoarjo Regency possesses a strong foundation in human development, yet faces two major challenges: population aging risks and gaps in data governance quality. Addressing these challenges will require cross-agency commitment, adequate budgetary support, and sustained efforts to improve data quality and information systems as the backbone of precise and sustainable development planning.
